As the first white wine addition to our Mondavi Sisters’ Collection, the Chenin Blanc is a throwback to original expressions developed by our Grandfather, Peter Mondavi Sr., over 60 years ago. Today, Chenin Blanc is considered a rare varietal in the Napa Valley with less than ten acres planted. We were fortunate our winemaker, and sister, Angelina was able to secure fruit from 74-year-old vines grown by a neighbor in the Napa Valley. Although most business deals in the 50s and 60s were formalized by a handshake, there is a high possibility our Grandfather sourced fruit from the same vines when he produced his Charles Krug Chenin Blanc.
As we return to our roots with a Napa Valley Chenin Blanc, our first vintage was picked on September 3, 2019 and cold fermented (Our Grandfather’s contribution to modern day winemaking) in stainless-steel drums and one new French Oak barrel. Making up for 10% of the blend, this single French Oak barrel contributes an additional layer of complexity and dimension to the mouthfeel, while the stainless-steel fermentation retains the delicate aromas of white and purple floral notes, lime zest, lemon verbena, and honeysuckle. Angelina’s use of cold fermentation, stainless-steel, and French Oak produced a Napa Valley Chenin Blanc that is crisp and fresh with vibrant acidity and depth.
