We were fortunate Mother Nature graced Napa Valley with a succession of optimal growing years. The 2012 vintage, being the first in this sequence, provided us with textbook conditions from start to finish. The consistent warm days and cool nights deferred the fall rains, allowing for outstanding flavor development and exceptional quality. Such a pristine growing year, combined with the meticulous winemaking skills of Thomas Brown and the expressive nature of our Cold Springs Vineyard, produced a wine that is bold and complex, yet beautifully balanced with plush tannins and mouthwatering acidity.
The vines, hand selected each year, are rooted in white tufa, red and brown loam, and iron-rich volcanic ash. These varying soil types are cherished elements that contribute to a wine with an impressive bouquet of perfectly ripened black and blue berries, cassis, and black cherries. As the wine evolves, aromas of dark berries intensify with savory hints of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and cigar box. These aromas carry through to the palate for a rich and juicy mouthfeel, followed by a long finish with spicy notes of nutmeg and cloves. This is a wine that should be enjoyed with family, friends, and food.
